Excavator weight class — sub-6 ton mini, 13-20 ton small, 20-30 ton medium, 30-50 ton heavy, 50+ ton mining — drives every other configuration decision. Get this wrong and the machine is either underused or overworked.
Decision matrix
| Project type | Recommended class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Urban landscaping | Mini 2-4t | Tight access; zero tail swing |
| Residential foundation | Mid 13-20t | 5-7m dig depth, manageable cycle |
| Commercial foundation | Mid 20-25t | Productive 6-7m depth, fits site |
| Highway construction | Mid 25-35t | Volume + speed at scale |
| Quarry primary loading | Heavy 35-45t | Bucket size for truck-loading cycle |
| Mining-feeder loading | Heavy 45-55t | Cycle time × bucket × productivity |
| Mining primary loading | Mining 70-90t | ADT/RDT loading at design rate |
| Pipeline trenching | Mid 25-35t | Reach + lift for pipe handling |
| River dredging | Long-reach 30-50t | 17-25m reach from bank |
| Demolition (mid-rise) | Heavy 35-50t | Reach + lift + ROPS/FOPS cab |
