- C-frame
- Reinforced cab guarding for demolition and forestry duty.
- Cab tilt
- Mechanism that tilts the entire cab forward for engine access.
- California Bearing Ratio (CBR)
- Measure of soil strength used in road design. Determines required subgrade preparation.
- CAN bus
- Controller Area Network — communication protocol linking the ECU, VCM, and other controllers.
- Capital allowance
- Tax deduction for capital expenditure on machinery. Major financing consideration.
- CAR (Contractors All Risk)
- Insurance covering construction-site damage including heavy equipment.
- Carrier roller
- Upper undercarriage roller that supports the track between sprocket and idler. Wears with use.
- Cat Connect
- Caterpillar's connected-equipment technology suite — includes Cat Grade, Cat Payload, Cat E-Fence, and Cat Product Link telematics. Standard on Next Generation machines.
- Cat E-Fence
- Operator-set virtual fence that limits boom, swing, and reach to prevent the bucket entering hazard zones.
- Cat Grade
- Caterpillar's 2D/3D grade-control system. Guides the operator to target grade via in-cab display.
- Cat Payload
- Cat's integrated weighing system that measures bucket payload during loading. Eliminates over- and under-loading of haul trucks.
- Cat Product Link
- Caterpillar's telematics platform — reports operating hours, fault codes, fuel consumption, location, and idle time.
- Cavitation
- Hydraulic-pump damage caused by vapour bubbles forming and collapsing. Usually caused by restricted suction or air ingress.
- CE marking
- European conformity mark indicating compliance with EU safety and environmental standards. Required for sale in the EU.
- Centre swivel
- Hydraulic rotary joint at the centre of the slew bearing that lets hydraulic lines pass from the upper structure to the undercarriage without twisting.
- CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight)
- Incoterms shipping term — seller pays freight and insurance to destination port; ownership transfers at port of loading.
- Class I Div 2 (NEC)
- US National Electrical Code classification for hazardous atmospheres. Applies to some oil-and-gas operations.
- Climate-controlled cab
- Cab with thermostatic air conditioning. Standard on all but the most basic machines today.
- Closed-centre hydraulics
- Hydraulic-system architecture where the pump output is blocked at neutral, generating no flow until commanded. More efficient than open-centre; standard on premium machines.
- Cohesive soil
- Soil with significant clay content — holds shape when wet, requires more digging force.
- Cold flow test
- Pump test at low temperature to detect cold-start hydraulic issues.
- Common rail injection
- Fuel-injection technology where all injectors share a high-pressure rail. Enables precise multi-shot injection per cycle for emissions and efficiency.
- Compactor wheel
- Hydraulic vibratory compactor attachment for trench backfill. Alternative term: padfoot compaction wheel.
- Compression test
- Engine diagnostic measuring cylinder compression. Low readings indicate worn rings or valves.
- Condenser (A/C)
- Front-mounted heat exchanger that releases heat from compressed refrigerant. Dust-blocked condensers cause A/C failure.
- Counterbalance valve
- Valve that prevents uncontrolled descent of a hydraulic load — essential safety component on boom and stick circuits.
- Counterweight
- Heavy rear-mounted weight that balances the boom and arm loads. Larger machines have heavier counterweights; uprating is sometimes done for long-reach conversions.
- CPM (Contractors Plant and Machinery)
- Insurance specifically covering construction equipment for accident, theft, and operational damage.
- Crab steering
- Steering mode where all wheels turn the same direction for sideways travel. Available on some wheeled excavators.
- Cracker
- Demolition attachment that breaks concrete and masonry by mechanical pressure rather than impact. Quieter than a breaker.
- Crankcase ventilation
- System that vents combustion blow-by gases from the engine crankcase. Blocked breathers cause oil leaks.
- Cribbing attachment
- Specialty grapple for handling railroad-tie cribbing.
- Crossover relief valve
- Valve that protects hydraulic cylinders against shock loads — essential for breaker and hammer attachment use.
- Crowd force
- Forward digging force exerted by the stick cylinder.
- CSA marking
- Canadian Standards Association safety certification. Required for sale in Canada.
- Customs bond
- Surety bond guaranteeing payment of customs duties. Sometimes used in lieu of duty payment for temporary imports.
- Cut and fill
- Earthmoving technique where material is excavated from one location (cut) and placed at another (fill). Standard practice in road construction.
- Cycle time
- Time to complete one full dig-swing-dump-return cycle. Lower is better.
- Cycle time
- Time for a complete dig-swing-dump-return sequence. Lower is better; benchmark KPI for excavator productivity.
