Suriname's gold sector is dominated by two large-scale operations — IAMGOLD's Rosebel mine in Brokopondo and Newmont's Merian mine in Sipaliwini — alongside a large universe of small-scale operations across the interior. Equipment buying needs vary dramatically across these segments.
Large-scale operations
Rosebel and Merian both run mining-class fleets — typically Caterpillar 374/385 or Komatsu PC850/PC1250 for primary loading, supplemented by 35-50 tonne mid-feeders for stockpile work. Service contracts are direct with brand dealers (CAT via Tractafric Suriname, Komatsu via direct dealer).
Small-scale interior operations
Hundreds of small-scale operators across Brokopondo, Sipaliwini, and Para districts deploy 20-30 tonne mid-class machines for alluvial mining. Common configurations:
- 20-25 tonne crawler (CAT 320, Komatsu PC200/210, SANY SY215C)
- Swamp track shoes for soft-ground alluvial work
- Long-reach configuration for creek-side operations
- Amphibious variant (Hyundai R220LC-9S AMP) for wetland sites
Suriname-specific configuration tips
- Tropical air filtration with frequent service intervals (high humidity = filter saturation)
- Corrosion-protection treatment for coastal operations
- Dutch-language operator manuals available on request
